LET ME TELL YOU
ABOUT A BAR,,,
Club Zebra is in a basement where they play EDM music on the weekends.
In Montana
It’s loud.
It’s dark.
Everyone is in an altered state of mind.
This is where I taught myself to speed paint.
THIS SERIES WAS ABOUT SPEED…
When someone walks up to you in a crowded basement bar and asks,
“How much for the painting?”
it can be difficult to explain - you’re taking your time.
I had been live painting at this venue for a few years, off and on, and was just starting to get comfortable with the idea of someone watching me paint or draw. Still shy. Gouache is a challenging medium, I had just started working with it. My speed had been improving, but I wasn’t awe struck with much inspiration.
Maybe it was the outfits I saw (and adored) through the night, maybe it was the music, but scantily clad women, modeling various helmets, cat-walked their way through my mind. Maybe, that would garner someone’s attention, if it had enough attitude.
I didn’t finish this series in the bar, the majority of it was done in my studio. Nonetheless, the series pays homage to all of the half-hazardly finished or quickly scratched pieces I’ve let go of over the years while I tried to improve how quickly I could produce… something.
anything, at least.
…IT WAS ABOUT TRUSTING CREATIVE FLOW…
… MOST OF ALL- IT WAS ABOUT PATIENCE.
There are various weekends I still visit Club Zebra- even if it is just to bring the staff bagels and paint a little
I feel confident enough to do that at least.
If you would like to purchase any prints of the series, you can do so in my shop linked here.
